| Many people ask how they can tell if they need a new bathroom or a major bathroom renovation. There are several tried and tested indicators - here are some that we know well.
1) The best reason to change over your bathroom is that the electrical appliances are not working correctly. Is there mould on the ceiling because the exhaust fan doesn't work? Is the lighting keeping you from seeing your makeup in the mornings? Or even worse, are the plugs old and cracked - getting ready to zap you? Bad or old electrics are inconvenient, dangerous, and often cost more to patch up then a full replacement.
2) Plumbing not working - taps that don't shut off properly, scream under pressure or lack pressure at all? Again, replacement is often a costly matter, and a full renovation may be a more sensible solution.
3) Cracked sinks, baths and shower bases - these collect mould and bacteria that never cleans away, as well as leaving the door open to an even more dangerous hazard down the track if these things give way completely. Imagine if the toilet gives way while you are sitting on it...
4) A colour scheme that looked really good in the 1970's. We don't have to say any more (although you can look at some of the photos to the right if you dare).
5) A poorly designed bathroom. Many people are completely surprised just how much room there is in a bathroom - even one in a small house - when it is properly designed. Modern techniques save space and create room. So if you feel claustrophobic in your bathroom - start thinking about a renovation!
6) Little or no shelf space. This might have been Ok when the family was a bit smaller - but now this is a real liability. Rather than try to add shelf space wherever you can fit it in, it may be easier to redesign the whole bathroom.
7) The family has downsized - the kids have moved out and the bathroom's all yours now. Time to turn into bathroom back in to your place! Let your imagination run wild and take it back!
Some of the over-riding factors here include not just functionality and convenience, but also safety issues where electrical or plumbing fixtures are old, worn, or plane not working.
In many cases it is easier to gut the bathroom and start newly on a renovation rather than to try to patch up an old bathroom year after year.
